The “secret” to being semi-famous on the Internet . . .
is to release unmistakable content — consistently & courageously
AND
to make a concerted effort to get your work in front of established audiences.
The “secret” to getting your work in front of established audiences . . .
is to make friends with bloggers, editors & content curators in high places.
The “secret” to making friends with bloggers, editors & content curators in high places . . .
is to be charming, genuinely enthusiastic, and patient.
AND
to offer something of value, before you make a request.
The “secret” to offering something of value . . .
is to know what makes you undeniably valuable.
The “secret” to knowing what makes you undeniably valuable . . .
is the work, the tension & the mystery of life.
BUT
you can start by tracking the things that people consistently THANK YOU for, and then cross-check those streams of gratitude with the things you LOVE doing.
The “secret” to figuring out what you LOVE doing . . .
is to do a LOT of things, pay close attention to the subtle flickers of your soul, and rule out your NOs with alacrity & vigor.
The “secret” to ruling out your NOs . . .
is FAITH.
Faith that every NO you deliver means somebody else gets an opportune YES.
Faith that there is enough fame, money, attention, almond croissants, sex, kisses & kombucha tea for you, your competitors & your allies.
Faith that your mettle is more than enough.
Faith that even if you crash & burn, you’ll be more than OK.
Faith that you’re a genius (congratulations!) simply by actively staying in LOVE with your work.
And the “secret” to actively staying in LOVE with your work . . .
is to make it your life’s ambition & highest priority to add to the LOVE in the world.
The End
(& you’re welcome)

I love this–it’s so very on point. I also think that it’s important to genuinely want to make friends with people, not just make connections for the purposes of doing business. “Friendship” that is really just a “you scratch my back, and I’ll scratch yours” proposition feels smarmy.
